It’s a good place to go for getting dressed up or dressed down.

For the past 10 years, The Jean Queen has been offering “clothes you can afford” – as the original sign read in 2000 when owner Corina founded it on the corner of 4th and Commercial. I still remember the first time I saw the sign and my friend said, jokingly: “Hmph! How do they know what I can afford?”

But the Jean Queen really did want to offer affordable options for people seeking fashion on a low budget. Families and single parents might not have a lot left over after food and rent, so it’s great to have a place that aims “to provide you with clothing that you will love yourself in, at a price you will love.”

At its first location, the JQ sold used clothing – including lots and lots of jeans, as the name implies. Today Jean Queen is at 2277 Commercial Drive, half a block from Broadway Station. Now they sell new fashion only, importing directly from distributors in Los Angeles. As the importer, they are able to sell a lot of fun, spirit-lifting outfits and pass savings to their customers. They have a big “curvy section” with a great selection of outfits in plus sizes.

I asked store manager Rosey Fabius what’s cool at the store right now?

“My favorite thing is our lingerie and our tutus. We have bustiers, lots of polkadots, fluffy pink. I like layering my tutus. We also have stockings, frilly underwear, frilly dresses, lots of vintage 50s style dresses…” she says.

My son and I have been regulars at this store for years and, I must confess, it’s rare that I actually buy anything for myself. Most often it’s my son getting a scarf or piece of jewelry for himself and he’s always enjoyed the toy box at the back. He asks lots of questions and they show him pieces from the glass cases. He loves all the flames and skulls on scarves and belt buckles and tough guy accessories. He also makes a lot of suggestions on my outfit choices, actually. I’m sure Rosey will always remember the time he begged me to buy myself that hot, black, PVC lingerie!

One good thing (for parents shopping with kids) is Jean Queen’s big toy box at the back – containing many items that once belonged to Corina’s son. It’s definitely a smart business practice on Commercial Drive to offer toys and play areas for children with fun, kid-loving staff. Moms often need help distracting their kids while they take the time to put an outfit together.
