What’s up with the new Trout Lake Community Centre?

Trout Lake Community Centre, first opened in 1963, is being replaced

Check out the vintage “Trout Lake Community Centre” sign – and see the building in the background? It was built in 1964 and will soon be gone.

The original community centre is being replaced by a new building. Today I started trying to imagine what the new one will be like, so I emailed a contact at the Vancouver Parks Board to ask for more details. I missed the VPB’s community meetings on the upgrade, so I want to get up to speed on the news.

I’m thinking it will be pretty amazing – since the City of Vancouver budgeted $22.5 million for the upgrade as part of the 2009-2011 Capital Plan, including the new ice rink built for Olympic ice skaters to practice in. Apparently the rink will open to the public for dry floor activities on May 6, 2010, says the Van Parks Board

It’s so exciting to think of a nice, new community centre in the neighbourhood. The old fitness centre and cardio room had a great community spirit and a nice view of Trout Lake, but it was kind of small and some of the weights were pretty old and clanky. I tried a couple of spinning classes and took my son to ice skating lessons at the old rink. But most often I went to other community centres, particularly Britannia, where I volunteered at the fitness centre and sat on the pool and fitness centre committee.

The Vancouver Parks Board website says the new Trout Lake Community Centre will include: a fitness centre, preschool, full-size gym, craft space, seniors centre, youth centre, a dance /aerobics studio, and a martial arts room. You also can download a PDF of a building plan for the Centre.

Maybe we should start a “Save the Sign!” campaign right here on the pages of Main Writer! Not sad to see the old rink go though. It was way too small.

It is a cute sign – reminiscent of a more innocent time… so I like to think…
