The perks of being a skater mom
I’m a skater mom – and I don’t mean a mom who rides a skateboard (though I have tried it). I keep a lawn chair in the trunk of my car, ready for sitting action beside the bowls and ramps.
We show up at the skate park when we feel like it – no need to rush for practice or game time. I use the time to work, read, or draw, while I sip a coffee and chill.
Once you get the basics – the deck and hardware (in the $100 – 200 range), a helmet (around $40), and a set of pads (around $50) – there are no fees or admission charges. Just show up at the park.
If your kid is interested in this great form of exercise, I recommend Skull Skates or Monke Skateboards, both local outfits owned by good guys who will set you up right.
At the park, I offer my bits of encouragement from the sidelines, but it’s not really a “Watch me mom!” situation any more. My son has been skating for a few years now, so it’s more about doing than being watched. Sometimes, on request, I take pictures or make videos – but these days my son doesn’t want to be a “poser” standing in front of mommy’s camera.
So I just enjoy the great, low-pressure atmosphere – relaxing and doing my thing while my high energy boy wears himself out.

Sounds awesome Susan! Jordan is into it more, recently upgraded from the $20 London Drugs board to skull skates, riding his board as much as his skooter.. we should hook up for one of those casual coffee drinking sitting afternoons kinda watching boys play! i’m in friend.
Cool! Maybe I’ll even bring cut up oranges to share! He tried soccer a few years ago but didn’t enjoy it – along with karate, fencing, yoga, ballet… He didn’t like swimming lessons much, but I cajoled him into it (as a safety thing) and he liked the ice skating lessons well enough (maybe due to taking it with his friend).
You rock,Skater Mom
I’m a skater mom too – our’s started when he was 6 then dropped it at 9 and now picked it back up at 12. It’s a great sport, great exercise and good coordination skills.
We’re heading to Vancouver in July and planning on longboarding around Stanley Park and skating at the local parks. Where do you skate?
Great to meet a fellow skater mom! We have a few different spots. Let’s get in touch via email and maybe meet up when you’re here!
